Nutritional Counseling

If your adult dog or cat is healthy, you may have chosen a pet food based simply on television advertising and whether or not your pet likes it. However, not all pet foods are equally nutritious. Choosing an appropriate diet can set your pet on a path of lifelong good nutrition and help prevent many health-related problems, including allergies, nutritional deficiencies, skin and coat disorders, and obesity. Feeding the right amount of food is also crucial and is not as simple as following the directions on the package (they’re just guidelines).

Nutritional requirements for dogs and cats vary depending on a variety of factors, including: age, size, breed, and health status. For instance, senior pets have significantly different requirements than puppies or kittens, and animals with diabetes, kidney disease, and other health conditions can benefit from special diets. Our veterinarians and staff members can help you make informed decisions about your pet’s diet. We can counsel you on which foods are the best choices based on your pet’s needs and your financial considerations, how much to feed, and even how to interpret pet food labels.

Many diseases can be improved or even eliminated by feeding your pet a specifically formulated prescription diet.  We are pleased to carry premium prescription diets made by Royal Canin Veterinary Diets®, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. ®, and Purina Veterinary Diets®.

Included in the pets that can benefit from prescription therapeutic diets are those suffering from: cardiac disease (heart conditions including valve disease, congestive heart failure, hypertension), urinary tract disorders (including kidney diseases and cystitis), hepatic (liver) disease, diabetes, allergies, gastrointestinal disorders (including pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, constipation and food allergies), skin and coat problems, dental disease and obesity.

We can create a nutrition plan specifically for your pet, and we’re also happy to work with owners to help their overweight pets get down to a healthy weight. We also carry a number of nutritious treats for your pets, as many of the grocery store treats are very high in calories and low in nutritional quality. Call us to set up a nutrition consultation for you and your pet. We are happy to advise you on what and how much to feed your pets.
